I was genuinely surprised when I discovered the novel I was reading was from Wuxiaworld. I had to double-check—I just couldn’t believe such a good novel came from Wuxiaworld. A truly surprising turn of events.

Wuxiaworld Discussion

Now, if you’re wondering why I’m saying this about Wuxiaworld, let me explain. Wuxiaworld used to be a haven for good novels, mostly free to read. However, after merging with another company, the inevitable happened—the website locked its chapters behind paywalls, despite assurances from the then-CEO that such measures wouldn’t be taken. The CEO eventually resigned, chapters were locked, and while new novels were translated, their storytelling quality often dropped to below average.

Take a look at the newer novels. Except for the one I’m talking about here, Unintended Immortality, and maybe A Villain’s Will to Survive, most of the others don’t stand out (at least for me).

Some novels have high ratings, even above 90%, which baffles me. While the beginnings are often promising, the stories tend to fall into repetitive, cliché patterns as they progress. I miss the days when even average stories were fun and exciting to read. Back then, there was always something to look forward to. Now, many novels feel like they’re written simply to fill a quota.

With Wuxiaworld now focused on profits, it feels like it’s on par with Webnovel in its approach. Perhaps I’ll dive into this comparison in another article.

Unintended Immortality

Unintended Immortality review

Unintended Immortality tells the story of Song You, a boy who descends from the mountain to explore the world. His adventures lead him to encounters with demons, ghosts, spirits, monsters, and a myriad of life’s complexities.

What stands out most about the novel? The Cat, the world-building, and Song You’s personality. Anytime the Cat is in the story, it’s a delight. In one instance, the Cat brings mushrooms to Song You, who begins sorting out the poisonous ones. The Cat picks them back up, prompting this exchange:

  • Song You: “What are you doing?”
  • Cat: “What are you doing?”
  • Song You: “Throwing.”
  • Cat: “Picking.”
  • Song You: “Why?”
  • Cat: “Why?”
  • Song You: “It’s poisonous.”
  • Cat: “What does poisonous mean?”

This playful banter is a recurring highlight in the story.

The novel’s pacing is slow, with many chapters dedicated to intricate world-building. Depending on your preference, this could be a pro or a con. For me, the early chapters were captivating, but it felt dull until the Cat appeared. The story feels peaceful, almost like a slice-of-life novel, with its charm rooted in character interactions and exploration. It’s not a plot-driven tale but a character-driven one, with Song You’s reactions and discoveries taking center stage.

As you progress past 20 chapters, the story balances its elements—world-building, character actions, and humor—making the rich details less overwhelming and more engaging.

In short, I highly recommend this novel. It’s not just a story but a testament to the author’s craft and attention to detail.

If you enjoy character-driven adventures but crave more action, I also suggest checking out Chronicles of Primordial Wars.
