Firstly, the animation quality of Yao Shen Ji – Tales of Demons and Gods is quite mediocre compared to other modern Chinese Anime (Donghua) such as The King’s Avatar or Mo Dao Zu Shi. The combat arts scenes lack finesse and look rather dull with minimal visual effects.
While it’s true that some older anime may not have great animation quality, Yao Shen Ji falls short even when compared to some relatively older anime. It is quite disappointing because the story and characters are really good.
Some characters appeared promising at first but were later forgotten without any explanation or development further on in the story. I felt like I had invested my time into something with no real payoff.
While there are elements of cultivation present in this anime that explore cultivation world tropes such as reincarnation and immortality, it fails to execute them properly resulting in a disjointed narrative with little depth or intrigue for audiences looking for more mature themes. Overall, while Yao Shen Ji – Tales of Demons and Gods has moments of entertainment, it falls short compared to other highly-acclaimed Chinese animes such as Mo Dao Zu Shi or Quanzhi Gaoshou – The King’s Avatar.
I would recommend this show because it is entertaining to watch. But I would highly recommend you read the manhua (Chinese Comics) or read Tales of Demons and Gods web novel.

Firstly, Yi Ren Zhi Xia suffers from poor pacing and character development. The story jumps from one plot point to another without giving us enough time to learn about the characters.
This issue is compounded by the fact that there are so many characters that we never really get to know them well enough.
Secondly, the animation quality in Yi Ren Zhi Xia leaves much to be desired. While it’s not terrible by any means, it pales in comparison to other popular Chinese anime like The King’s Avatar or Mo Dao Zu Shi. Nevertheless, the fight scenes are well choreographed.
Yi Ren Zhi Xia is a decent Chinese anime that has its fair share of strengths and flaws.

Soon, individuals with extraordinary powers appear, engaging in battles that showcase their unique abilities. Each episode unravels a fresh enigma, unveiling new mysteries in the process.
While it’s not my favorite Chinese anime out there, I can appreciate the effort put into creating its unique setting and themes. However, if you’re looking for an anime with great character development and animation quality, Yi Ren Zhi Xia may not be your cup of tea.

Meng Qi Shi Shen – Adorable Food Goddess
Out of all the Chinese animes out there, Adorable Food Goddess, also known as Meng Qi Shi Shen, is one of my absolute favorites.
This show has everything that I could ask for in a great anime: interesting characters, an engaging storyline, and beautiful animation. However, what sets it apart from other animes and even other Chinese animes is its unique concept of cooking and food.
Meng Qi Shi Shen: Zaijie Liangyuan (also known as Cinderella Chef: Adorable Food Goddess) follows Ye Jiayao, a modern-day celebrity chef with a passion for traditional Chinese recipes and culinary experimentation. However, a failed food experiment catapults her back in time to ancient China, where she takes on the identity of Ye Jin Xuan, the daughter of a magistrate.
Amidst her journey, she finds herself kidnapped to Hei Fang Camp, where she encounters Xia Chun Yu, the leader of a bandit group who is actually an undercover agent. To navigate this new world, Ye Jiayao’s exceptional cooking skills and modern street smarts win over hearts, including Xia Chun Yu’s.
With an engaging storyline that combines adventure, comedy, drama, and romance, Meng Qi Shi Shen: Zaijie Liangyuan offers a delightful exploration of food, historical settings, and time travel. The series has received positive reviews for its captivating plot, lovable characters, and mouth-watering food scenes. With a runtime of 20 minutes per episode, this ONA anime is a delightful treat for fans of adventure and gourmet genres.
Its storytelling is superb, and its beautiful animation will leave you in awe. So if you’re looking for something different to watch, give Adorable Food Goddess a chance and let it entertain using food and increase your knowledge about food at the same time.

With a runtime of 8 minutes per episode, Shi Xiong delivers fast-paced action, comedy, and horror elements. The series has received mixed reviews, with some praising its humorous parody and satirical approach to modern Chinese society.
The animation style and character designs have also been appreciated by viewers. However, others have found the story and character development to be lacking. Overall, Shi Xiong offers an entertaining and concise zombie-themed experience for fans of the genre.

To Be Hero
To Be Hero is a prime example of how Chinese anime can push the boundaries of traditional anime storytelling. The show’s unique take on superhero tropes and its absurdist humor make it a standout in the world of Donghua. It’s also an excellent starting point for anyone looking to explore the more unconventional side of Chinese Anime.
The story follows Uncle, who, after being sucked into a toilet, gains superpowers from the Space Peace Republic Alliance Hero Committee. However, this transformation turns him into an unattractive, unrecognizable person, causing his daughter to reject him. Despite the odds, he strives to prove his identity to his daughter and saves Earth from alien threats.
The show is humorous and enjoyable, particularly for those who appreciate offbeat comedy and quirky character designs.
One thing that immediately stands out about To Be Hero is its animation style. The show employs a minimalistic, almost crude approach to its visuals, which can be jarring at first but ultimately becomes part of the show’s charm.
The characters are drawn with exaggerated features that make them instantly recognizable, and the animation emphasizes fluid movement over intricate detail. The storytelling in To Be Hero is also a breath of fresh air compared to more formulaic anime shows.
Overall, To Be Hero may not be for everyone due to its unconventional animation style and offbeat sense of humor. Still, it’s an excellent showcase for how Chinese Animation can bring something new to the table in terms of storytelling and visual aesthetics.
Yaoguai Mingdan – Monster List
Yaoguai Mingdan (Monster List) is an anime adaptation of a Chinese web manga with the same title. The story revolves around our hero, Feng Xi, who is caught between a foxy temptress, a mysterious misty tree demon, and a girl with divine powers. It features an exciting mixture of action, comedy, fantasy, and romance.
The anime presents three arcs, each consisting of six episodes from a total of 18, with each episode averaging 13 minutes.
Set in a world where monsters coexist with humans unbeknownst to them, the story is driven by fate and promises, with the protagonist’s life undergoing a significant change due to the discovery of his girlfriend’s true monstrous identity.
The animation and character designs may not be good as Japanese anime, but they remain serviceable for first-time viewers. The art style in the anime lacks detail compared to its source material, the manhua.
If you like the romance between human and monster girls, there’s no reason not to watch this anime.
Shuangsheng Lingtan – Twins Spirit Investigators
Shuangsheng Lingtan also known as Twin Spirit Detectives is a Chinese anime series centered around twin brothers Sun Xiaotu and Sun Xiaohu who work as paranormal investigators.
The show’s premise is intriguing, following the brothers as they delve into the supernatural, attempting to separate their daily lives from their often challenging and sometimes dangerous job. The brothers encounter a myriad of paranormal mysteries that increasingly blur the lines between truth and fiction.
The show stays true to its original comic version and has a unique and interesting storyline featuring the cool and funny twin brothers solving mysteries. The story is engaging and is highly recommended for fans of supernatural and mystery genres.
Congqian Youzuo Lingjianshan – There was once a Spirit Blade Mountain
Congqian Youzuo Lingjianshan, also known as There was once a Spirit Blade Mountain is one of the most well-known Chinese animated shows or Donghua series that have been adapted from a famous web novel.
Reikenzan: Hoshikuzu-tachi no Utage (different name) is a unique blend of comedy and fantasy genres that caught my attention for its promising premise. Airing from January to March 2016, this 12-episode anime, produced by Studio Deen and based on a light novel, offers a unique blend of humor and mysticism.
The story unfolds in the nine provinces of Kyushu, where a disastrous event was once predicted but never happened. Instead, a boy named Ouriku is born, seemingly touched by the heavenly phenomenon. The story mainly follows Ouriku as he embarks on his journey through trials to become a sage in the Reikenzan clan.
One aspect that stands out about this anime is its rich narrative fabric, steeped in prophecies, spiritual energy, and celestial events. However, the story’s pacing can be a double-edged sword. While it provides room for character development and world-building, it might feel slow for viewers expecting more action-packed sequences.
Character-wise, Ouriku is a delight, offering a mix of seriousness and charm, his determination and growth throughout the series are compelling to follow. The supporting cast, each with their quirks and personalities, adds layers to the storyline. The blend of comedy within the fantasy setting provides a unique tone to the series.
The animation quality holds up, offering vibrant visuals that complement the fantastical elements of the plot. While the comedy and fantasy genre mix might not be for everyone, those who enjoy character-driven narratives with a blend of humor should find Reikenzan: Hoshikuzu-tachi no Utage to be a rewarding watch.
This anime is an enjoyable journey for any anime enthusiast looking for a tale of personal growth set within a richly conceived fantasy world.
Aishen Qiaokeli-ing… – Cupid’s Chocolates
Taking a delightful plunge into the world of ‘Aishen Qiaokeli-ing…‘, also known as Cupid’s Chocolate, we find ourselves engaging with an intriguing narrative centered around Jiang Hao Yi, a run-of-the-mill high school student who, quite against his nature, ends up becoming the Harem King of his school.
As the story unfolds, we see Jiang Hao Yi caught in a whirlwind of confessions by several beautiful girls, none of whom he actually knows. This surprise element provides a unique twist to the harem genre and propels the story forward with each episode.
The series consists of fifteen episodes, each with a duration of about 14 minutes. Brought to life by Tencent Animation & Comics, it has been adapted from a web manga.
The anime infuses the comedy and romance genres effectively, capitalizing on the themes of the harem and school life, which are staples within the anime world. These well-treaded paths, combined with the unique premise of the story, give the show a fresh feel while maintaining a sense of familiarity for the seasoned viewer.
However, the series does have its downsides. There is a lack of background information provided for the characters, making it harder for the viewer to form an emotional connection with them. Additionally, the plot often veers towards the nonsensical, with Jiang Hao Yi’s dilemma regarding the sudden confessions appearing rather forced and over the top.
That said, the anime is entertaining and engaging, providing a light-hearted viewing experience. The humor is well-timed and effective, while the romance, despite its unusual initiation, unfolds with a sweetness that is hard to resist.

Tian Bao Fuyao Lu – Legend of Exorcism
In a sea of anime releases, Tian Bao Fuyao Lu, also known as Legend of Exorcism, offers a refreshing plunge into a world beautifully crafted around history, action, and fantasy themes.
The series, originally aired in mid-2020, spans thirteen episodes, each about 20 minutes long.
The plot revolves around Kong Hongjun, a half-yao (demon) who spent his entire life on Mount Taiheng, venturing into the human world. Kong is tasked with three duties: to find his father’s murderer, to extinguish the Black Jiao and its infiltrating Yao tribes, and to restore the Heart Lamp to a descendent of the Chen family. Each episode delves deeper into his journey and the challenges he faces in a world unfamiliar to him.
The highlight of Tian Bao Fuyao Lu is its remarkable blend of action and fantasy in a historical setting. The series excels at bringing together distinct elements from these genres to create a story that is captivating, thrilling, and at times, genuinely touching.
The action scenes are well-choreographed and expertly animated, making for some truly exhilarating moments.
While the series boasts a respectable score of 7.43 on MyAnimeList, it does have its drawbacks. The story can be somewhat convoluted, and some might find it challenging to keep up with the multiple story arcs. However, patience and attention to detail are rewarded as the storyline unfolds and every piece falls into place.
Overall, Tian Bao Fuyao Lu is an under-appreciated gem in the realm of anime. While it might not have garnered widespread popularity, its compelling storyline and stunning animation make it a worthwhile watch for any anime aficionado seeking a touch of historical fantasy and action in their watchlist.

All in all, I can say without hesitation there are truly the Best Chinese Animes that have been an incredible experience for me as someone who loves Japanese anime. And most of the animes in the list above won’t probably disappoint many viewers who are new to the donghua universe.
